Our mission

AVSC International works worldwide to improve the lives of individuals by making reproductive health services safe, available, and sustainable. We provide technical assistance, training, and information, with a focus on practical solutions that improve services where resources are scarce. We believe that individuals have the right to make informed decisions about their reproductive health and to receive care that meets their needs. We work in partnership with governments, institutions, and health care professionals to make this right a reality.

What does AVSC stand for?

We are frequently asked, "What do the letters AVSC stand for?" Today, the name AVSC International is not an abbreviation. It stands for who we are and what we do, and for the ideals to which we are committed. We express those ideals in our mission statement.

Until 1994, the letters of our name stood for the Association for Voluntary Surgical Contraception. However, the scope of our work had grown well beyond what those words conveyed, and in 1994 we changed our name to AVSC International. At that time, we decided to use the letters AVSC, although they correspond to our former name, in order to maintain a connection to almost 50 years of achievement and a worldwide reputation for high quality and effective work in the field of family planning and reproductive health.

What we do

AVSC International is one of the largest nonprofit organizations dedicated to making reproductive health care accessible to women and men around the world. We work in over 40 countries to develop clinical services where none exist, to expand and improve services at local and national levels, and to build both the ability and the commitment to provide quality health care that individuals want. We work with governments, health institutions, networks of providers, and clinic staff. Our extensive experience and leadership in the areas of voluntary sterilization, family planning service delivery, quality of care, and informed choice are relied upon the world over. These core areas of expertise form the foundation for what today is a broad program supporting voluntary family planning and reproductive health services, including health care for sexually transmitted infections, postpartum care, and postabortion care.

  • Technical Assistance and Training: We conduct training seminars and assist health care providers in developing practice guidelines for reproductive health services. We provide on-site technical assistance for health care workers on safe medical technique, quality improvement, informed choice, management, and supervision.

  • Research: We design and conduct research and program evaluations that enable staff and colleagues in the field to learn from our work in service delivery. We conduct research on knowledge and attitudes about contraceptive methods, factors affecting method choice by clients, male family planning decision-making, client experiences with counseling for informed choice and clinical services, cost of sterilization services, and development of low-technology advances in reproductive health care.

  • Publications: We prepare technical reference and training materials that are grounded in the realities of service delivery. We develop, collect, and package information to make it practical and accessible in a wide variety of settings.
