Are Norplant implants the right method for me?

There are a number of factors you should consider to determine whether Norplant implants are the right contraceptive method for you. As with any contraception, you should first talk to your doctor or a counselor at your local clinic or hospital before using Norplant implants as a contraceptive method.

Norplant implants may be an appropriate method for you

If any of the following is true:

  • You prefer a very effective method of contraception and want a long-acting method.
  • You prefer a method that is not linked to sexual intercourse or that does not require doing something every day.
  • You can tolerate menstrual changes such as spotting between periods, longer or heavier periods, or no periods at all.
  • You cannot for medical reasons, or do not want to, use contraceptive pills containing estrogen (COCs). (Some medical conditions that are precautions for use of COCs are not precautions for use of Norplant implants.)
  • You have sickle cell disease.
  • You have just delivered a baby. If you are breastfeeding, Norplant implants may be inserted six weeks after delivery. If you are not breastfeeding, Norplant implants may be inserted immediately after delivery, or at any time you and your health care provider believe you are not pregnant.
  • You have just had an abortion. Norplant implants may be inserted on the same day as the abortion, or at any time you and your health care provider believe you are not pregnant.

Norplant implants may not be an appropriate method for you

If any of the following is true:

  • You are at risk of exposure to, or transmission of, sexually transmitted infections, including HIV infection. Norplant implants do not provide protection against these infections. Aside from abstinence, latex condoms offer the best protection against these infections.
  • You have unexplained abnormal vaginal bleeding.
  • You are taking medication for seizures or convulsions or rifampin (rifampicin), an antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis.
  • You have had or are suspected of having breast cancer. Progestins do not cause breast cancer.

Norplant implants are not an appropriate method for you

If the following is true:

You are pregnant or suspect you may be pregnant.
