The information provided here is meant to give you general information about diaphragms and does not replace the need to talk to a health care provider if you would like to use withdrawal as a contraceptive method.

What is withdrawal?

Withdrawal is a method in which the man takes his penis out of the woman's vagina just before his climax.

Is it effective?

Withdrawal is effective when it is used every time the man has sexual intercourse.

NOTE: Withdrawal does not provide protection against HIV infection and other sexually transmitted infections. Aside from abstinence, latex condoms offer the best protection against these infections.

How does it work?

Withdrawal works by not allowing the man's sperm to enter the woman's vagina. If the man's sperm do not enter the woman's vagina, she will not get pregnant.

How do I use withdrawal?

When you feel that you are about to ejaculate, remove your penis from inside the vagina. Make sure that ejaculation takes place away from the entrance to the vagina.

Other instructions

Return to the health facility if:

  • You are not happy with this method.
  • Your partner thinks she is pregnant.
  • You want information about, or want to start using, another family planning method.
  • You think there is any chance you may have been exposed to HIV infection or any other STI.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of withdrawal?

Advantages:

  • Withdrawal does not require medication or supplies.
  • Withdrawal can be used when other methods are not available.
  • Withdrawal has no side effects.
  • Withdrawal is permitted by some religions and cultures that do not permit other methods.
  • Withdrawal can be discontinued by the man on his own.
  • A woman who has just delivered a baby or had an abortion may start using withdrawal with her partner as soon as they start having sexual intercourse again.

Disadvantages:

  • Withdrawal does not provide protection against HIV infection and other sexually transmitted infections.
  • Withdrawal requires the man's self-control.
  • Withdrawal may reduce the pleasure of sexual intercourse.
  • When withdrawing, even though the man takes his penis out, some sperm may have already gotten into the woman's vagina.

Is withdrawal the right method for me?

There are a number of factors that you should consider before deciding whether withdrawal is right for you. These questions can help you determine whether withdrawal might be an effective contraceptive method for you.
